What is a Challenger Learning Center?
Onboard astronauts in the Space Station Simulator work with their counterparts in the Mission Control Simulator to fly one of four simulated space missions: Rendezvous with a Comet, Return to the Moon, Voyage to Mars and Encounter Earth. These simulations provide plenty of challenges for the crews in space and on the ground. From kindergarteners to adult groups, space mission simulations can be tailored for your group* for field trips, birthday parties, corporate team building and much more!

When students fly their Mission to Mars, not only do they have fun, but they also exercise the development of their Math, Science, and Technology Process Skills by completing curriculum-based activities aligned with New York State Learning Standards.

  • A space simulation for young people in grades 5-10 and other non-school groups.
  • A standards based program that offers four different inquiry based scenarios. Individuals work as a team performing jobs that mirror science & technology in real world careers.
  • Individuals assume the role of a mission specialist operating a space station and mission control and must keep the crew safe while facing various problems and challenges.

Each mission includes:

  • 8 hours of teacher in-service training
  • Pre and post classroom materials specially designed to prepare students for each mission
  • 2 to 3 hour student mission for the whole class
  • Missions can be combined with in-house planetarium programming or visits to other historical or cultural venues

Long before the students come to the center, their teacher attends an in-service program in which they receive preparatory materials for classroom use before their mission.
